What details from a swap do I need for my tax report

You need the date, the asset amounts and types exchanged, the transaction hash, and the fair market value in your local currency at the moment of the swap. These four items form the minimum data set that tax authorities expect when you report a crypto-to-crypto trade.

Swap crypto

You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.

The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. convictiononsol.xyz never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.

Tax treatment of a swap is straightforward in most jurisdictions. Selling one cryptocurrency to buy another is a taxable event. You realise a gain or loss on the asset you gave up, and you acquire a new cost basis for the asset you received. Without the details above, you cannot calculate either figure.

The four essential details

Date and time. The exact moment of the swap determines which price you use. If you trade at 10:00 UTC and the price moves sharply by 11:00, your tax liability could differ. Record the timestamp in your local time zone and in UTC. Screenshots from the exchange interface often show the time; the transaction hash on the blockchain will confirm it.

Asset amounts and types. You need the full name or ticker of the token you sent and the token you received. The quantity matters down to the smallest decimal place. A swap of 0.5 SOL for 100 USDC is not the same as 0.5 SOL for 100 USDT. The contract address for each token helps if the ticker is ambiguous - many tokens share the same symbol.

Transaction hash. This is the blockchain's receipt. Every swap on Solana produces a unique hash. Save it. If a tax auditor questions your report, the hash lets them verify the trade on-chain. It also anchors the date and amounts to an immutable record.

Fair market value in your local currency. Tax authorities do not care about crypto-to-crypto prices. They want the value in USD, EUR, GBP, or whatever your reporting currency is. You need the price of the asset you sold at the exact time of the swap. Many exchanges display this in the trade history. If not, you can derive it from the ratio of the two assets and a reliable price feed for either token.

Why these details matter

Without the date, you cannot assign the swap to the correct tax year. Missing the asset amounts means you cannot calculate gain or loss. No transaction hash leaves you without proof if the exchange's records disappear. And without the local currency value, you cannot file a number the tax authority recognises.

Different countries treat the same swap differently. Some tax every trade, no matter how small. Others exempt trades below a threshold. The four details above let you or your accountant apply the correct rules. They also allow you to reconstruct your cost basis later if you sell the received asset.

What else to save

The exchange confirmation email or page often contains all four details in one place. It also shows the transaction fee, which is usually deductible. Save the fee amount and the asset used to pay it.

If you swapped through a decentralised exchange, the interface may not show the local currency value. You will need to record that yourself. A timestamped price feed from a reputable source works. The page "Proof you swapped for your tax trail" explains how to assemble and store these records so they hold up in an audit.

A note on record keeping

Tax authorities expect you to keep records for years - often three to seven, sometimes longer. The transaction hash is the only detail that survives without your intervention. The rest you must store yourself. A simple spreadsheet with the four fields, plus the fee, is enough. Screenshots of the exchange interface and the blockchain explorer page for the hash add redundancy.

The question is not whether you can reconstruct the details later. You might, if the exchange still exists and the blockchain is still accessible. The question is whether you want to spend hours hunting for a trade you made three years ago. Save the details now. The work is small. The cost of not doing it can be a penalty or a rejected filing.
